6 (Hypothetical) Storylines To Make The 2013-14 NBA Season More Interesting
True sports fans are excited that the 2013 NBA Season is finally tipping off. That being said each season is starting to sound for the most part like the one before it. The good teams will remain good, the bad teams will stay horrible, and a base of 10-15 stars will dominate the nightly highlights. If professional hoops were (spoiler alert) scripted like professional wrestling, the 2013 NBA season would be a prime candidate to start invoking a little shakeup and these are six storylines that would bring back the common fan.
5. The Spurs Turn Horrible
The Spurs have been for the most part dominant for a better part of two decades but outside of San Antonio nobody really cares to watch them. Their style of basketball is methodical and defensive minded which is great for increasing a winning percentage but doesn’t do much to attract new fans. Getting San Antonio out of the playoff picture with a horrible season would open up a spot for fresh new blood to step up in the Western Conference. Plus, with the 2014 SuperDraft on the horizon Spurs fans wouldn’t even be too upset about a down year.
4. Tank Fest 2013
This isn’t even hypothetical as 2013 is going to be marked with some historically bad basketball by about 5-10 NBA teams. Like the movie Wanted where they say “kill 1 save 100,” tanking this year could net a team 10+ years of playoff success thanks to the talent that is entering the 2014 NBA Draft. Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker, and Julius Randle are bona fide NBA superstars of the future and there is All-Star talent through the top 20 of the draft.
3. The Charlotte Bobcats Chase the Bulls 72 Win Season
One team that knows a little bit about bad basketball is the Charlotte Bobcats who have been historically bad in the past. That all could change in 2013/14 as they capture the hearts of the nation with an aging roster of no-names who pull out buzzer beaters night after night. Las Vegas will list them as underdogs in every game until the All-Star break but they’ll defy the odds and win their ever growing fan base millions of dollars. Then the Bobcats will prove that they’re serious about chasing the Bulls record when owner Michael Jordan suits up at 50 years of age then swings a trade for a free-agent-to-be who is just returning from injury… Kobe Bryant.
2. Kevin Durant And Russell Westbrook Become Mortal Enemies
Just like when the Rockers split up as a tag team from the WWF in 1991 enabled Shawn Michaels to win multiple championships, Durant may have to part ways with Westbrook before he ever becomes legendary. This storyline could play out nicely in the 2013 NBA season with Westbrook missing the first 4-6 weeks of the season. If the Thunder get off to a roaring start only to start faltering when their PG returns, the tension could tighten like a wrestling ring turnbuckle. On court fights between the two superstars and rumors of a Westbrook affair with Durant’s new wife Monica Wright could make Thunder games appear like an episode of Basketball Wives.
1. LeBron James Gets Injured
He’s the most exciting player in the game possibly ever and nobody should ever root for an injury but LeBron tearing his ACL wouldn’t be the worst thing in the NBA. First off, it opens up a whole new intensity level of competitive basketball for teams who see this as their one ‘non-LeBron’ opportune year to win the title. Plus it changes the whole landscape of 2014 free agency because what team wants to pay over $200 million to an aging superstar coming off a knee reconstruction (answer: all of them). LeBron gets to stay in the news with his inevitable rehabilitation comeback video and studio analyst work and D-Wade gets his Heat back as Miami fans rally around their star who puts the three-peat chance on his aging shoulders.
Off course these are all hypothetical situations, but hey, it could happen.
