The concept of a smart watch is nothing new. Sony offers one and the startup company Pebble blew up Kickstarter with its concept e-paper smart watch that can connect to either iOS or Android devices. Ne’er to be left behind, Apple may be developing its own smart watch that uses Bluetooth technology to connect to the tech giant’s devices. Chinese Web site Tech.163 recently reported Intel is working with Apple to design the smart watch with a 1.5-inch PMOLED display made by RiTDisplay with ITO-coated glass.

It’s not that Apple doesn’t offer a form of a smart watch already. The iPod Nano can attach to a wrist band and be used as a watch. Still, as users seek more ways to stay connected, the Bluetoothless iPod Nano has become less appealing.

Tech.163 sources claim the Apple smart watch could be released in the first half of 2013. But as tech watchers are well aware, Apple rumors must be taken with a grain of salt. We’re still waiting for that television.

Should the product come to fruition, however, questions have already been raised about its usefulness in the market. Few actually wear wrist watches anymore as the timepieces have been replaced with smartphones and other handheld electronics. Furthermore, where does Intel fit into the picture? Apple has never needed the company’s microprocessors for its phones or tablets, so why start with a watch?
