It’s the Ford Mustang’s 50th birthday! What does that have to do with social media? Well, as part of its publicity campaign for the Mustang and its status as an American pop culture icon, Ford recently conducted a survey about how often and why Americans do or don’t try new things; what it found was that almost 30 percent of those surveyed have done something so they could post about it on social media.
According to the The Atlantic, Ford reports that 29 percent of people surveyed responded affirmatively to the question, “Have you ever, even once, done something just so you could post about it on social media?” The respondents were about evenly split between having done this once and having done it multiple times.
The survey, which involved 1,000 adults aged 18 and older, “suggests Americans value adventure more than they demonstrate in real life,” according to Ford — basically a nice way of saying that people want to appear more bold and adventurous than they really are. The study found that 45 percent of the adults surveyed felt that their online friends and followers appeared more adventurous on the Internet.
In terms of actual sense of adventure, the survey revealed that 33 percent of men think they’ll be the first to try new technologies, as opposed to 25 percent of women; more women said that fear of failure held them back from trying new things (including experiences, not just technology). Overall, almost half of the survey respondents said they didn’t do new things because of a lack of money, while fear of failure was the reason for 27 percent and embarrassment was the reason for 26 percent.
It’s no secret that people carefully curate their online personalities to appear cooler and more exciting than they really are; however, now it appears that we’re actually tailoring real life and participating in experiences just to fit our desired online profile, and that’s a little creepy. However, Ford’s survey, although small, reveals a fascinating tendency to both exaggerate ourselves due to a desire to look good and hold ourselves back due to certain basic fears — so maybe it all evens out in the end.

]]>The post Apple Angers Twitter With Sex-Censored Engraving Process appeared first on Wall Street Insanity.

Did you know you can’t get the word clit engraved on the back of your iPhone? Most people, who’ve never attempted to append the word to their messages remain ignorant of the fact, and a great many of them, until this morning at least, probably included Apple engineers. An online campaign is bringing light to the situation and the double standard at the heart of the matter.
Apple probably didn’t want to spend Friday dealing with complaints from online feminists, but it’s managed to raise the ire of several groups after it became clear that the company’s iPhone engraving service regards several words relating to the female anatomy as inappropriate. The campaign, which was started by a blog post from Justyn Hintze, is operating on Twitter under the hashtag #myclitmychoice.
According to Hintze, she attempted to have a line of poetry from Alix Olson engraved on the back of her iPad. The line, which reads “I’ll give myself a lube job,/shake my broomstick til my clit throbs” returned a message decrying its “inappropriate language” and denied the request to have the line engraved on the iPad. Hintze, obviously affronted at the denial, began to experiment with the Apple engraving system.
Image via justlust.org
According to the blogger, Apple will allow references to male genitalia to be engraved on an iPad. There should be some understanding about the word dick being allowed, given that it’s a common name, but the word penis was able to make it past the inappropriate language check. When it became clear that the word vagina was censored, the campaign began, and Apple’s PR people will be running to put out fires all morning.
Image via justlust.org
Hintze referred to the Olson line as “feminist, sex-positive, and it makes me smile. Every. single. time.” in her blog post.
Although Hintze suggested in the same blog post that there was some kind of intent behind the Apple denial, it’s unlikely that company executives held a meeting and decided that this was the best way to deal with inappropriate language. The clit denial was likely caused by a filter that uses a standard list of offensive words.
The blogger said, “My hypothesis was correct: the reason I cannot use the word clit is because Apple is so entrenched with sexism and misogyny, and frankly, is terrified of women’s bodies and women’s pleasure.”
There is no doubt that the situation should be changed, and little doubt that Apple will do just that, but the incident is not damning of Apple so much as it is a reminder of the misogyny that still exists throughout society. The dictionary of inappropriate terms used by Apple needs an update, as do the internal dictionaries of people around the world. The kind of personal offense taken at the misogyny of robots seems, however, to be a misdirection of energy.

Call him the “The Dark Knight of Watches” or the “Horological Batman,” there is one guy in Europe that is operating as a serious vigilante for designer jewelry.
Instagram user fakewatchbusta, makes it no secret that his mission is to call you out for buying or selling fake designer watches. The anonymous man, who has managed to build up a huge, loyal Instagram following (77,746 followers, to be exact) for his vigilante work says he started busting fake watches “for fun” but then found it “both tragic and funny” when people were bragging about their fake timepieces. Now he gets legal threats everyday, not to mention the risk that Instagram will shut down his account—again. Fakewatchbusta’s first account was shut down after he called out basketball star Carmelo Anthony. Other rappers on his list: Ice-T (and his son), Rick Ross, Soulja Boy and Sean Kingston. He told Noisey about how sometimes he gets a response from the celebs, but the truth is always on his side.
“I just busted Jadakiss and he responded that he didn’t buy no watch from that guy,” Fakewatchbusta says in an interview with the music blog.
But I found a video that I posted proving (he dealt) with him, and he even had the fake watch on his wrist. It’s all on the account.”
So, on that note: What rappers can we trust are sporting the real bling? Fakewatchbusta has a list for that, too.
“Meek Mill is genuine, 50 Cent is genuine, Eminem got one Rolex, and it’s real. Jay-Z is the one with the nicest watches. He is not into all the bling, he got some real quality high-end watches. He also has his own models from both Audemars Piguet and Hublot.
While he admittedly enjoys calling out celebrities on their crap and getting a few laughs, Fakewatchbusta says his work has now taken on a new meaning. He says his passion is fighting against the replica production industry for its use of hazardous materials and especially child labor, and it’s not just fake watches that fuel this economy.
At the prices they sell this for it’s not possible to [make these watches] in an ethical way and the working conditions must be some of the worst there is. Just buy a goddamn Seiko.”

]]>Sending an extremely important message to the internet generation, Gary Turk’s spoken word film “Look Up” urges people in the twenty-first century to stop staring at their iPads and smartphones and opt for real, human interaction instead.
Written, performed, directed, filmed, and edited by Turk, the short video ironically went viral, now boasting over 12 million views since it was posted to YouTube on April 25, 2014. The video has received mixed reviews, largely positive. The negative reactions hinge on the irony of a video that warns of Internet overuse getting Turk a little taste of online fame.
Turk did pay homage to this irony with a line in the video where he admits, “I’m guilty too of being part of this machine, this digital world where we are heard but not seen.” That being said, Turk’s verse condemning “smartphones and dumb people” uses a love story that never happened (thanks to technology) to let us know what humans today are missing as their social interactions increasingly take place in a virtual space.

All parents remember hating homework once upon a time when they were kids, but comedian and star of “Louie” Louis C.K. took to his Twitter account Monday night to rant about the absurdity of his kids’ third grade math homework today.
“My kids used to love math,” the comedian began his rant.

Frustrated with lengthy word problems and standardized tests, Louis C.K. snapped pictures of his kids’ homework problems and blamed textbook publishers for what he felt teachers were having to work harder to teach.

If you’ve been wondering to yourself what Peter Griffin’s life is like unfiltered and outside the confines of your TV, then you’re in luck. Our favorite family guy just started an Instagram account and has been quite busy posting pictures of, well, things that only Peter Griffin would post — and yes, he’s a fan of selfies.
Of the 15 photos Peter has posted on his Instagram account under username PeterPumpkinEater69, we can see his everyday life is just like we’d expect it to be. There’s a photo of Lois passed out in bed, mouth hanging wide open (c’mon man, let a woman get some beauty rest), one of Peter’s delicious lunch of 10 baked potatoes, and another of Meg enjoying a book on the couch, appropriately captioned, “So disappointed in this one. #shutupMeg.” But the selfies are the true gems of Peter’s account; we particularly loved the pic of Peter taking a selfie while eating baked ziti at the gym. It just goes to show that celebrities…. well, they’re just like us. (Although we could’ve done without the rotten, bleeding toenail pic, dude.)
Gross pics aside, Peter has racked up a healthy following of more than 255,000 fans in just a couple of weeks because he’s awesome, and hello — this is the Family Guy’s account! Can’t wait to see more selfies of you defecating on the toilet with Stewie!
Check out some of Peter’s awesome Instagram pics below.

]]>The post Twitter Redesign Looks An Awful Lot Like Facebook appeared first on Wall Street Insanity.
]]>Image via Twitter
Twitter has started to roll out its redesign for a few celebrity tweeters. When all users find their new Twitter profile in the coming weeks, they will see more prominent photos, larger placement for popular tweets and a timeline format. In effect, the new look makes Twitter seem an awful lot like Facebook .
The new timeline breakdown allows users to view stand-alone tweets, tweets with photos and video or just tweets and replies when landing on a feed. Everyone will have a larger cover photo as well as the photo at the top left of the home page. Twitter’s new emphasis on photos and the format of its redesign recalls Facebook on numerous visual points. As for the tweets, the most popular will show up larger in a user’s Twitter feed than those that got little engagement.
For example, this tweet from Floyd Mayweather about his gambling winnings on the NCAA Championship figured prominently in the boxer’s feed.
I bet on the underdogs @uconnhuskies twice within the last three days. $75,636 pic.twitter.com/B5TfT1zGMT
— Floyd Mayweather (@FloydMayweather) April 8, 2014
Meanhwhile, Mayweather’s more pedestrian tweet from a day earlier — about hanging out and watching TV — has a smaller showing in the champ’s feed.
Enjoying my Sunday afternoon watching some basketball games. http://t.co/RiUK9jYyYahttp://t.co/Z54inOIEok
— Floyd Mayweather (@FloydMayweather) April 7, 2014
Twitter users will also be able to pin a representative tweet to the top of their profile page to give visitors a snapshot of what they’ll find. Among the first users who already have the redesigned Twitter in action, First Lady Michelle Obama (@FLOTUS) and Channing Tatum (@channingtatum) join Mayweather and a few other celebrities in the mix.
The social media microblogging platform clearly liked some aspects of Facebook enough to emulate its style. If you don’t like the way Facebook looks but have been happy with Twitter, the redesign may be tough to take.

Jetpac analyzed more than 150 million Instagram posts in 6,000 cities worldwide to come up with the definitive social ranking of the happiest countries in the world.
Jetpac is a startup known for its social travel guide app. They compiled its rankings by coming up with a “smile score.” Each photo received a “smile score” based on the size of the persons smile in the image. The bigger the smile, the higher the score.

People who love to get their hands on Ralph Lauren attire, but are working on a budget, got a surprise last night when a code for 65 percent off appeared on Instagram. Twitter erupted with people buying in bulk, sharing their experiences on the social media site.
Apparently, someone got their hands on an employee discount code and shared it with the world. Currently, news is that Ralph Lauren will honor any purchases made before midnight that took advantage of the deal.
